Activities

1. Keynote speech at the biannual meeting of Indonesian Society of Remote Sesing in Bogor, Indonesia, on 9 August 2010

Project leader introduced the necessity of coastal habitat mapping for sustainable development of coastal waters in WESTPAC region and some interesting results on habitat mapping using satellite remote sensing and acoustic remote sensing.

2. Side workshop on Remote Sensing for Coastal Habitat Mapping, 30-31 March 2011, during the 8th IOC/WESTPAC International Scientific Symposium in Busan, Republic of Korea

The workshop, considered as the starting-up of this project, was designed to exchange current information on the coastal habitat mapping in member states in order to identify target coastal area for mapping habitats in each participant’s country from various viewpoints such as important ecosystems, vulnerability of ecosystem, their distributions, human impacts including fishing activities and reclamation, contrasting areas with and without conservation measures. Importantly, the workshop aimed to exchange and review coastal habitat mapping and sea-truthing methods, ameliorate and standardize these methods adapting to the WESTPAC region in this project. Participants were 36 persons including six persons funded by JFIT. The workshop discussed some appropriate outreach products on coastal habitat mapping for integrated coastal area management at the end of this project. At the first step of this project, the participants decided to target seagrass bed mapping by satellite remote sensing. The results would be presented at the next workshop.

3. Lecture on coastla habitat mapping at the NOWPAP/PICES/WESTPAC Training Course on Remote Sensing Data Analysis held in Vladivostok from 8 to 12 October 2011

Project leader introduced the necessity of coastal habitat mapping for sustainable development of coastal waters in WESTPAC region and some interesting results on habitat mapping using satellite remote sensing and acoustic remote sensing. Two trainees from WESTPAC region were selected by the WESTPAC secretariat and project leader.

4. Workshop on Remote Sensing for Coastal Habitat Mapping, 28-31 November 2011, at Universiti Technologi Malaysia, Johor Baru, Malaysia

The second workshop aimed to exchange current information on the seagrass bed mapping in each member state. Participants were requested to bring their preliminary results of seagrass bed mapping by remote sensing in order to identify target coastal area for mapping seagrass beds in each participant’s state. Number of participants was 16 persons including eight participants funded by JFIT. In the workshop, we reviewed seagrass beds mapping and sea-truthing methods for ameliorating and standardizing these methods adapting to the WESTPAC region. The workshop discussed also some appropriate outreach products on seagrass bed mapping for integrated coastal area management at the end of this project. The participants decided to bring the seagrass mapping results conducted by the standardized methods and their own methods in the next workshop for comparison.
