WESTPAC Training Workshop on the Identification of Box Jellyfish in the Eastern Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Thailand

13 Jun 2016 - 17 Jun 2016

1. Background

Jellyfish are typified as free-swimming marine animals consisting of a gelatinous umbrella-shaped bell and trailing tentacles. They are found in every ocean. Jellyfish adversely affect humanity by toxic tings or massive blooms. The most obvious consequences are human injury or death and reduced coastal tourism. Jellies destroy fishnets, poison or crush captured fish, and clog cooling equipment, such as power plants and ship engines. From 2003 to 2009, it was reported in Thailand that 381 patients from the Surat Thani, Krabi, Phuket, and Satun Provinces have been diagnosed with suspected exposure to venomous jellyfish.

Given the increasing jellyfish blooms in the region and the lack of information on this emerging issue, the IOC Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (WESTPAC) established a Working Group with objectives to review available data and information, and define knowledge gaps for the analysis of the pattern and trend of the distribution and/or source of harmful jellyfish in the tropical Western Pacific.

To achieve the objectives, this training workshop is developed, aiming to: enhance the regional research network on harmful jellyfish; provide identification techniques on venomous jellyfish with a focus on box jellyfish species in the eastern Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Thailand.

2. Date and Venue

The training workshop will take place on 13-17 June 2016, hosted by the Phuket Marine Biological Center with detailed address as below.

Phuket Marine Biological Center (PMBC) 51 Moo 8, Vichit, Muang, Phuket 83000, Thailand

3. Training Contents

The training course will mainly consist of lecture sessions and several hands-on sessions. Key lectures will be given by  with Dr. Lisa-Ann Gershwin and several experts invited from the region. Moreover, all trainees will be divided into several small groups with each group required to make a 10-15 minute presentation on their knowledge acquired from this training workshop.

Lecture session:
-- Biodiversity of venomous jellyfish in the eastern Indian Ocean

Hands-on session:
-- demonstration & identification: Carukiidae: Morbakka
-- demonstration & identification: Chirodropidae: Chironex
-- demonstration & identification: Carybdeidae: Carybdea
-- demonstration & identification: Carukiiidae: Carukia and other Irukandjis
-- demonstration & identification: Chiropsalmidae: Chiropsella
-- demonstration & identification: Chiropsalmidae: Chiropsoides
-- demonstration & identification: Tripedaliidae: Tripedalia and Copula

The training workshop will be conducted in English.

4. Trainees and financial assistance

This training workshop is open to young scientists from universities and research institutes in WESTPAC member states with priority given to those having scientific background on box jellyfish research. Applicants should have a good command of English.

Given the limited financial resources available, a joint committee will be established for the selection of most suitable participants from SEA countries that would be provided with financial support.

Applicants are required to send their CVs, the filled-in application forms (see appendix 1), no later than 30 April 2016, to Ms Kingkanjana Sangtunchai (kingkanjana.pouy@gmail.com), with a copy to Dr Xuelei Zhang (zhangxl@fio.org.cn), Dr Kongkiat Kittiwatanawong (kkongkiat@gmail.com), and Ms Nachapa Saransuth (n.saransuth@unesco.org).

Only selected participants will be contacted no later than 5 May 2016. A certain number of self-funded applicants will be also selected to take part in this training workshop.

5. Visa

Information on visa requirement and procedure can be found on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand at http://www.mfa.go.th/main/en/services/123

Participants requiring an entry visa to Thailand are strongly advised to apply for it with the Thai Embassy or Consulates in your country as soon as possible in order to secure the required entry visa prior to your departure.

The Local Secretariat will be glad to provide you any assistance if needed.

6. Transportation and other logistics arrangements

The Phuket International Airport is located 45.6 kilometers away from the hotel and the training venue. Phuket Marine Biological Center (PMBC) will provide assistance on local transportation service between the hotel and the training venue. Detailed logistics information, including the transportation between the airport and the hotel, will be sent to all participants at a later stage.
