Joint 5th Workshop on ADOES with Asian SOLAS in Nagasaki, Japan, 2010
Joint 6th Workshop on ADOES with Asian SOLAS in Qingdao, China, 2011

Side Workshop on WESTPAC-ADOES, the 5th and the 6th Workshop on ADOES were successfully organized in 2011.

IOC/WESTPAC Side Workshop was held on March 30, 2011 in Busan, Republic of Korea, including seven 15-minue talks and three 30-minute invited presentations with a focus on impacts of Asian dust on biogeochemistry and productivity in marine ecosystem and transport path of Asian dust and its deposition flux to the Western Pacific. The workshop was divided into three sessions from 10:00 to 18:30 on the day and there were 30-40 attendants in each session. After these talks, participants had one-hour open questions and discussion. Prof. Adina Paytan from University of California, Santa Cruz delivered an invited talk on aerosol impacts on marine phytoplankton. Prof. Xiaohong Yao from Ocean University of China gave an invited talk related to atmospheric chemistry in marine environment. And Prof. Jing Zhang from East China Normal University presented a study on nitrogen deposition from the Yellow and East China seas to NW Pacific Ocean.

The 5th International Workshop on Asian Dust and Ocean EcoSystem (ADOES) was held on November 29- December 2, 2010 in Nagasaki, Japan, Professors Mitsuo Uematsu (Japan), Gangyu Shi (China), and Soon Chang Yoon (Korea) began the workshop by first welcoming the 33 participants from Japan, China, Korea, and the United States, and then outlining the workshop objectives for the group.

The workshop goals were to improve the scientific understanding of the processes controlling the origin, transport, physicochemical nature and effect of Asian dust on ocean biogeochemistry. Additionally, the meeting was intended to enhance regional cooperation among the ADOES group and with other similar SOLAS initiatives around the world.
